What grade of material is thermosetting polystyrene board
2025-04-23

Thermosetting Polystyrene Board, as a new generation of insulation material, has attracted much attention in the field of building energy efficiency. Its fire rating and comprehensive performance are directly related to safety, energy conservation, and environmental protection effects. This article will analyze the nature of materials, fire standards, and application levels.

1、 Essence of Materials and Classification Standards

Thermosetting polystyrene board uses a special process to pre form expandable polystyrene (EPS) beads, which are then heated and molded in a mold to form a three-dimensional network structure through chemical cross-linking reactions. In the Chinese GB8624-2012 "Classification of Combustion Performance of Building Materials and Products" standard, it is classified as B1 level flame-retardant materials (combustion growth rate index ≤ 250W/s, total heat release after 600s ≤ 15MJ). Some high-end products can achieve higher level requirements by adding expansion flame retardants or surface coating treatment.

The German DIN4102 standard corresponds to B1 level, requiring a critical radiation flux of ≥ 8kW/m 2. In the ASTM E84 test in the United States, the flame spread index (FSI) of high-quality thermosetting polystyrene board is ≤ 25, and the smoke density rating (SDR) is ≤ 450, meeting the Class A fire protection requirements. The Japanese JIS A1321 standard emphasizes the classification of smoke toxicity and stipulates that the smoke toxicity index (LC50) must be greater than 2.0.

2、 Analysis of core fire prevention technology

Chemical structural modification: By introducing brominated epoxy resin or phosphorus nitrogen flame retardants, the continuous combustion conditions of polystyrene chains are disrupted.

Physical barrier technology: The surface composite ceramic fiber layer (thickness 0.5-1mm) can block heat transfer and increase the critical radiation flux by more than 15%.

Microencapsulation treatment: Encapsulating flame retardants in micrometer sized capsules to slow down the release rate and enhance the sustained flame retardant effect.

3、 Fireproof performance level and application

According to the EU EN13501-1 standard, high-quality thermosetting polystyrene board can reach B-s1 and d0 levels (combustion performance level B, smoke production level s1, and droplet d0 level). The mainstream products in the US market have undergone third-party testing and have a continuous combustion time of no more than 15 seconds under open flame conditions, with a peak smoke density of less than 500. Actual test data shows that a 80mm thick thermosetting polystyrene board has a temperature rise of ≤ 140 ℃ on the back fire surface at 800 ℃, meeting the fire protection requirements of the external wall insulation system specified in GB/T29906-2013.

Thermosetting polystyrene board, with its dual protection mechanism of "physical flame retardant+chemical inhibition", meets the B1 fire protection standard and has the characteristics of low comprehensive thermal conductivity (≤ 0.035W/(m · K)), high strength (compressive strength ≥ 0.1MPa), and good processability, making it an ideal choice in the field of building insulation. When selecting, it is recommended to focus on the manufacturer's third-party testing report and cooperate with a professional construction team to ensure the integrity of the system's fire protection.
